Jamie Redknapp sends message to Liverpool about top 25-year-old
Jamie Redknapp suggests that Liverpool should cash in on Philippe Coutinho this summer
Jamie Redknapp has told Liverpool to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona this summer.
The Brazilian playmaker’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent weeks as Barcelona search for a replacement for Neymar following the Brazilian’s world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain.
Liverpool are understood to have rejected a number of bids for Coutinho from Barcelona, but matters got more complicated on Friday when the Brazilian was said to have handed in a transfer request.
It now remains to be seen whether Liverpool will opt to cash in on Coutinho or make him stay at the club beyond the summer transfer window.
However, former Liverpool star Coutinho says the Reds should look to sell the playmaker sooner rather than later.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Watford on Saturday, Redknapp said: “It’s a nightmare for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
“Coming into the season, it should be a time full of optimism but instead everyone is talking about the talisman, Philippe.
“It’s difficult now as he doesn’t want to be there, Liverpool is one of the biggest clubs in the world but he doesn’t want to be there.
“You can sell him for £90m so what’s the best for the club? It’s getting to the stage where if he doesn’t want to be here, no player is bigger than Liverpool. Take the money, he doesn’t want to stay anymore and £90m is good money, incredible money.”
Liverpool have control over the situation because Coutinho only signed a new five-year contract with the Reds back in January of this year.
However, it remains to be seen whether they will be prepared to keep Coutinho at the club for this season, seemingly against his will.
