Ian Wright questions why Liverpool won’t agree huge deal for 25-year-old
The Arsenal legend tells Liverpool to cash in on Philippe Coutinho in the summer transfer window
Ian Wright has questioned why Liverpool are still refusing to sell Philippe Coutinho despite the midfielder handing in a transfer request.
Liverpool have been fending off interest from La Liga giants Barcelona throughout the past couple of weeks since Neymar moved to Paris Saint-Germain in a world-record £198m move.
The Reds have refused to budge despite Barcelona making an offer in the region of £118m for the South American playmaker.
Coutinho handed in a transfer request earlier this month in an attempt to force through a move to the four-time European champions before the close of the summer transfer window.
The Brazil international has missed Liverpool’s opening three games of the 2017-18 season due to a back injury.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Liverpool should cash in on the 25-year-old attacker despite the deadline to accept Barcelona’s offer for the Brazilian star passing on Sunday.
“He doesn’t want to play for them. He has put a transfer request in,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I don’t know why Liverpool are holding onto him. He wants to go. He doesn’t want to be at the football club any more.”
Liverpool were 1-0 winners against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Saturday afternoon following a 3-3 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road in their season opener last weekend.
The Reds eased to 2-1 victory over Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League playoff last week.
The Merseyside outfit will host the German side in the second leg at Anfield on Wednesday night.
