Steven Gerrard makes admission to Liverpool fans about Philippe Coutinho
Steven Gerrard discusses how the uncertainty about Philippe Coutinho's future could be affecting Liverpool
Steven Gerrard has admitted that the uncertainty surrounding Philippe Coutinho’s future is not helping Liverpool at the start of the season.
The Brazilian’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent weeks amid reports that Barcelona have identified him as one of their top summer transfer targets.
Liverpool have made it clear that they do not want to sell Coutinho this summer, but the matter became more complicated when the midfielder was reported to have handed in a transfer request earlier this month.
It remains to be seen where Coutinho will be playing his football at the end of the transfer window, but former Reds captain Gerrard admits that the situation is far from an ideal one for the Merseyside outfit.
Speaking on Premier League Tonight on BT Sport, former Liverpool star Gerrard admitted: “It’s not helpful.
“Ideally you want Coutinho out there and helping the team. [But] it’s an easy excuse.”
Liverpool are currently preparing for the return leg of their crunch Champions League play-off clash against Hoffenheim at Anfield on Wednesday night.
The Reds beat the German side 2-1 in the first leg away last week, as Jurgen Klopp’s men look to make a return to the Champions League group stage following their fourth-placed finish last season.
