Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard lavishes praise on Sadio Mane following his top start to the new season
Steven Gerrard has lavished praise on Sadio Mane following his strong start to the season with Liverpool.
The 25-year-old notched up an assist as Liverpool secured a thumping 4-2 win over Hoffenheim in their Champions League play-off tie at Anfield on Wednesday night as Jurgen Klopp’s men booked their place in the group stage of Europe’s elite club competition.
Mane was the hero for the Reds last weekend when his goal proved the difference in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Merseyside.
Former Liverpool captain Gerrard is clearly a huge admirer of the Senegal international as he heaped praise on the attacker after the Reds’ triumph at Anfield.
Speaking to BT Sport after Wednesday’s game, former Liverpool star Gerrard said: “He’s a special player.
“I think his goal return is fantastic. He got 15 goals in 32 appearances (last season). He’s becoming a fan favourite here, he scores all kinds of different goals.
“Lots of pace and he’s a threat all over the pitch. He breaks the line with his runs, he’s very direct and when he gets in he’s got pure quality.”
Two goals from Emre Can and strikes from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino secured the win for Liverpool on Wednesday.
Liverpool are currently preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Arsenal at Anfield as they look to try and build on their victory over Palace last weekend.
The Reds are aiming to mount a serious challenge for the title this season after they finished fourth in the table last term, in what was Klopp’s first full season in charge.
