Steven Gerrard has urged Liverpool to do what they can to push through a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer.

The Reds ended up having to settle for a point after squandering the lead during their opening Premier League game against Watford in Saturday’s 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move to sign Van Dijk for much of the summer but a move has failed to materialise since Southampton accused the Reds of an alleged illegal approach back in June.

There is still a sense that Van Dijk could be set to leave Southampton, though, with the 26-year-old defender himself having handed in a transfer request in recent days.

And after watching Liverpool’s defence struggle during the 3-3 draw with Watford, Gerrard urged the Reds to try and make a fresh move to sign the Netherlands defender.

Speaking on Premier League Tonight on BT Sport, Gerrard said: “He would certainly be a help [to Liverpool] with the size of him and his presence. Everyone knows he’s a magnet in the box.

“That’s the reason why he’s going to go for about £50m-60m.”

Liverpool are now preparing for the first leg of their crunch Champions League play-off clash against Hoffenheim on Tuesday night as they look to take a step closer towards the group stage of Europe’s elite club competition.

The Reds finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term.
