Liverpool line up £18m bid for 29-year-old German – report
Liverpool are pondering a bid to sign defender Benedikt Howedes from Schalke, say reports
Liverpool are preparing to make a £18m bid to try and sign defender Benedikt Howedes from Schalke, according to reports in Germany.
German outlet DW Sports, as quoted by the Daily Express, is reporting that Jurgen Klopp has targeted the defender as he looks to strengthen his rearguard options before the close of the transfer window at the end of the month.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, but that move appears to have fallen through since the Reds were accused of an alleged illegal approach by the south coast club.
Now, it is being claimed that Klopp has set his sights on trying to bring 29-year-old defender Howedes to Anfield before the close of the transfer window next Wednesday.
Howedes already has experience of playing alongside Liverpool man Joel Matic, with the pair having been team-mates together at Schalke.
Liverpool have signed three players so far this summer, after having tied up deals for Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Dominic Solanke.
The Reds are now preparing for their crunch Premier League clash against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday as they look to make it back to back wins following their 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace last weekend.
