Liverpool ‘still very much interested’ in signing top 26-year-old – report
Liverpool are still keen on signing defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, say reports
Liverpool are still keen on signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer, according to reports in the British media.
The Daily Mail is claiming that the Merseyside outfit still hold a strong interest in the defender despite how the transfer saga has unfolded until now.
The Reds were heavily linked with a move to bring the 26-year-old defender to Anfield at the start of the summer but were forced to publicly withdraw their interest in the player.
That came after Southampton accused Liverpool of an alleged illegal approach for Van Dijk, prompting the Reds to issue a statement apologising to the south coast club back in June.
However, Van Dijk’s future continues to be a source of speculation this summer, and the player himself is thought to be keen on a move away from St Mary’s.
Now, the report in the Daily Mail is claiming that Liverpool are still hopeful of being able to complete a deal for Van Dijk before the close of the summer transfer window.
Liverpool have been linked with a host of players so far this summer but have only brought in Dominic Solanke, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.
The Reds are preparing to kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Vicarage Road to take on Watford on Saturday lunchtime as they look to start the season with a win.
Liverpool will take on Hoffenheim in the play-off round of the Champions League later this month.
