Phil Thompson tells Liverpool to sign top 24-year-old right now
The Liverpool legend wants to see the Reds make an offer to sign Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Phil Thompson has urged Liverpool to kick-start their summer transfer business with the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal.
The England international’s future has been a source of relentless speculation throughout the summer transfer window so far.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has failed to reach an agreement with the north London side about a contract extension despite entering the final 12 months of his current deal.
Liverpool have been touted as a potential target for the Merseyside outfit as German coach Jurgen Klopp looks to expand his squad for the 2017-18 season.
The Reds are facing competition from Premier League champions Chelsea for the 24-year-old’s signature in the current transfer window.
Oxlade-Chamberlain started Arsenal’s 4-3 win against 2016 champions Leicester City in their Premier League opener at the Emirates Stadium last weekend.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson wants Klopp to get his summer transfer business back on track before deadline day with the addition of Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal.
“Signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a start and would be available for the right money with his contract situation at Arsenal, but the club need to be ready to move if they do sell so we’re not caught short,” Thomspon told Sky Sports.
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.
The Reds have signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window so far.
