Phil Thompson suggests Liverpool should target top 21-year-old attacker
Former Liverpool star Phil Thompson believes the Reds should consider targeting Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli
Phil Thompson believes Liverpool should target Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli if Philippe Coutinho moves to Barcelona this summer.
The Brazil playmaker is being linked with a move to the Catalan side in the summer transfer window as Barcelona look to replace Neymar.
The Spanish giants have reportedly made two bids to sign the Liverpool number 10 but the Merseyside outfit have refused to sell the 25-year-old.
Liverpool have reportedly placed a huge price tag on their prized asset as Jurgen Klopp looks to keep his prized asset for the 2017-18 season.
However, Thompson believes Liverpool should target Alli if the Reds relent and sell Coutinho to Barcelona before the close of the summer transfer window.
“They could go after Dele Alli, who was a Liverpool supporter as a kid. Tottenham are a bit like Liverpool in that there’s always a price on a player,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
Coutinho scored 13 goals and made seven assists in 31 appearances in the Premier League last season to help Liverpool secure a return to the Champions League.
England star Alli netted 18 times and created seven goals in 35 games to help the north London side finish as runners-up behind Chelsea in the title race.
Liverpool were initially linked with a move to sign Alli from MK Dons during Brendan Rodgers’ spell in charge of the Anfield outfit.
Spurs ended up signing the England international in a £5m deal in 2014.
