Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool need to sign ‘dominant’ personality to challenge for title
Former Irish defender Kenny Cunningham believes Liverpool need two signings to challenge for the title
Liverpool need to sign a dominant centre-half and a central midfielder to challenge for the Premier League title this season, according to Kenny Cunningham.
The Reds have endured a frustrating summer transfer window so far after failing to land top targets RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window so far.
However, the Merseyside outfit’s long-term problem defending set-pieces rose its head on the opening weekend as Liverpool drew 3-3 with Watford at Vicarage Road.
The Reds were 2-1 winners against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League playoff on Tuesday night to edge a step closer to the group-stage draw.
Former Wimbledon and Republic of Ireland defender Cunningham claimed that Liverpool are two players short of putting together a sustained title challenge this term.
“They need a centre-half – Van Dijk or somebody else. They need a dominant centre-half with a forceful personality,” Cunningham told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“The weakest side of their defence is left-back. They have some good options there.
“Maybe a centre midfielder as well. Naby Keita didn’t come in.They are still short in one or two areas to be serious title contenders.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a long-awaited return to the Champions League.
The Reds will host Crystal Palace in their next top-flight fixture at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
