Graeme Souness believes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp needs three or four new signings to challenge for the title.

The Reds will start the 2017-18 Premier League campaign with a trip to London side Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday lunchtime.

Liverpool finished in fourth place in the top-flight table last term to secure a place in the Champions League after a two-season absence.

The Merseyside outfit have signed three players in the summer transfer window so far but have missed out on RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool spent a club-record £39m deal to sign Egypt international Mohamed Salah from Serie A giants AS Roma last month.

Klopp has also signed Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window.

However, former Liverpool captain Souness doesn’t expect Liverpool to challenge for the title unless Klopp can bring in three or four new faces before deadline day.

“Liverpool are three or four players light if they’re going to challenge [for the title],” Souness told Irish radio station Newstalk on Wednesday night.

Liverpool will take on Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim over two legs for a place in the Champions League group stage.

The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.

Klopp led Borussia Dortmund to the Bundesliga twice during his spell in charge at Westfalenstadion.
