Liverpool told to make offer for proven 29-year-old Premier League attacker
The Liverpool legend wants to see Jurgen Klopp make an audacious bid to sign Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero
Phil Thompson has urged Liverpool to make an offer to sign Sergio Aguero to test the striker’s resolve to remain at Manchester City.
The Argentina international has struggled to make a big impression under current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola despite his outstanding record for the Citizens.
Aguero scored Manchester City’s opening goal in a 2-0 win against Brighton and Hove Albion in their Premier League opener last weekend.
Liverpool are fending off interest from Spanish giants Barcelona in their prized asset Philippe Coutinho before the close of the summer transfer window.
The La Liga side have already failed with two offers for the Brazil international as Barcelona look to sign the No10 to replace the world’s most-expensive player Neymar.
Former Liverpool captain Thompson believes the Reds should consider a move for Aguero with the South American potentially unsettled under Guardiola at the Eastlands outfit.
“Sergio Aguero is another player that might be interested if he’s not happy at Manchester City, but it comes back to being late in the window and that is the difficult situation Liverpool find themselves in,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
Coutinho moved to Liverpool in an £8.5m deal from Serie A giants Inter Milan in the 2013 January transfer window.
The Reds haven’t won the Premier League title during Coutinho’s stay at the Anfield side.
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to secure a return to the Champions League.
