Liverpool are unlikely to sign Monaco forward Thomas Lemar before Thursday’s transfer deadline, according to David Amoyal.

The Reds have emerged as surprise contenders to sign the France international from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco.

Arsenal were initially favourites to land the 21-year-old attacker before the close of the transfer window.

Their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur entered the race to sign Lemar, having experienced his talents firsthand in the Champions League last term.

But Liverpool stepped up their interest in the France international earlier this week with two offers to sign the Monaco star.

However the French league champions turned down Liverpool’s approaches despite the Reds including Divock Origi as part of the deal.

ESPN reporter Amoyal claimed that Liverpool have a mere 30 per cent chance of signing Lemar before the summer transfer window shuts at 23:00 BST on Thursday night.

“Could the talented 21-year-old winger join his former teammate Bernardo Silva in England before the window closes?” Amoyal wrote in his ESPN column.

“Not likely, according to reliable reports in France, in fact both of Liverpool’s recent bids, one including Divock Origi, were turned down.

“It appears Monaco are determined to keep Lemar after losing a raft of key stars this summer.”

Liverpool have made an unbeaten start to the Premier League season after a 4-0 win against Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds booked their place in their Champions League thanks to a 6-3 aggregate win against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the playoff round.

Liverpool will take on Spanish side Sevilla, Slovenian outfit Maribor and Russian club Spartak Moscow in the Champions League group stage.
