Chelsea, Liverpool told top 26-year-old would be great summer signing
ESPN FC pundit Paul Mariner believes Virgil van Dijk would be a big hit at Liverpool or Chelsea
Virgil van Dijk would be a hit at Chelsea or Liverpool if the Southampton defender secures a summer move, according to Paul Mariner.
The Netherlands international has been heavily linked with a move to the Reds in the summer transfer window but a deal has failed to materialise so far.
Indeed, Liverpool suffered a humiliating setback in their pursuit of Van Dijk after the Merseyside outfit were forced to issue an apology to Southampton.
In the same statement, Liverpool officially ended their interest in the 26-year-old centre-half, however the Merseyside outfit continue to be linked with Van Dijk.
Van Dijk is training away from the rest of his Southampton team-mates as the Saints defender looks to secure his summer move.
Premier League champions Chelsea are rumoured to have entered the race to sign Van Dijk as the Blues look to capitalise on Liverpool’s poor relations with Southampton.
Speaking to ESPN FC about Van Dijk’s future at St Mary’s beyond the summer transfer window, former Arsenal striker Mariner said:
“I think he has to go. He has set his stall out.
“He has his eyes set on Liverpool. Wherever he goes, he will be a hit.”
Liverpool ended up in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League.
