Jamie Redknapp confident Liverpool will sign 26-year-old ahead of Chelsea
Jamie Redknapp believes Virgil van Dijk will move to Liverpool ahead of interest from Chelsea in the summer transfer window
Jamie Redknapp is backing Liverpool to sign Virgil van Dijk ahead of Chelsea.
The Netherlands international handed in a transfer request at Southampton on Tuesday to open up the possibility of Van Dijk leaving St Mary’s this summer.
Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign the 26-year-old centre-half throughout the summer transfer window but a deal has failed to materialise.
Indeed, the Merseyside club issued a statement apologising to the Saints about their pursuit of the Netherlands defender and officially pulling out of the race.
However, the Reds are still being named as a potential destination for the former Celtic man despite their statement earlier this summer.
Liverpool are thought to be facing competition from Premier League champions Chelsea as Antonio Conte looks to add more squad depth ahead of the 2017-18 season.
Former England and Liverpool midfielder Redknapp believes the pull of working with Jurgen Klopp will convince Van Dijk to turn down the chance to live in London.
“It’s a difficult one. The pull of London. A lot of players want to live there,” Redknapp told The Debate on Sky Sports.
“Klopp is a big pull for him from what I hear. He wants to work with Klopp. Liverpool need a centre-half desperately, perhaps Chelsea less so. I think he will go to Liverpool.”
Van Dijk moved to Southampton in a £15m deal from Scottish Premier League champions Celtic in the 2015 summer transfer window.
Liverpool have only signed AS Roma defender Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson.
