Dietmar Hamann sends message to Liverpool fans about Man United signing
Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann questions why Jurgen Klopp didn't rival Man United for signing of Nemanja Matic
Dietmar Hamann has questioned why Liverpool didn’t pursue Nemanja Matic after the midfielder helped Manchester United ease to a 4-0 win over West Ham on Sunday.
The Red Devils signed Matic in a £40m deal from the Premier League champions earlier this month after Chelsea made the surprising decision to sanction the defensive midfielder’s sale.
The west London side signed Frenchman Tiemoue Bakayoko in a £40m deal earlier this summer to provide greater competition for places at Stamford Bridge.
However, Chelsea’s decision to sell Matic appears to have already spectcularly backfrired after the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.
The Blues suffered a shock 3-2 loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge as Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas were both sent off in west London.
Manchester United, meanwhile, eased to a commanding 4-0 victory over West Ham at Old Trafford thanks to Matic’s impressive display against Slaven Bilic’s side.
Former Liverpool midfielder Hamann questioned why Jurgen Klopp didn’t move to sign the Serbia international from their title rivals ahead of Manchester United.
Hamann wrote on Twitter: “Matic the missing link to make United title contenders. Shrewd buy by Mourinho. Type of player LFC badly needed. At least I’m not walking alone.”
Liverpool played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Watford in their Premier League opener on Saturday.
