Phil Thompson urges Liverpool to make summer signing in key position
The Liverpool legend wants to see Jurgen Klopp bring in a creative midfielder ahead of the new Premier League season
Phil Thompson has hinted that Liverpool need to sign a creative midfielder ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Reds are preparing for the 2017-18 season ahead of a return to the Champions League following a two-season absence.
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last term to finish ahead of Arsenal and book their place in the Champions League play-offs.
The Merseyside outfit have signed three players in the summer transfer window in order to bolster their squad depth.
Mohamed Salah moved to Liverpool from AS Roma in a club-record £39m deal before Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke moved for a tribunal fee.
Jurgen Klopp has also addressed his team’s perceived weakness at left-back after snapping Hull City full-back Andy Robertson.
Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita but the German club have rejected the Merseyside outfit’s attempts to sign the 22-year-old.
Former Reds defender Thompson admitted that Liverpool’s weakness remains a lack of creativity in midfield.
“I think it’s that little bit of creativity in central midfield,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“When Emre Can, Georginio Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson all play, Liverpool need a bit more forward-thinking play.”
Liverpool have never won the Premier League title but finished in second place in 2002, 2009 and 2014.
The Reds won the Champions League in 2005 but haven’t won a major trophy since their League Cup triumph in 2012.
