Insider tells Chelsea, Liverpool top 26-year-old still wants summer transfer
Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol reveals that Virgil van Dijk still wants to leave Southampton this summer amid interest from Chelsea and Liverpool
Virgil van Dijk is determined to leave Southampton in the summer transfer window amid interest from Chelsea and Liverpool, according to Kaveh Solhekol.
The Netherlands international handed in a transfer request last week as the centre-half looks to force a move to a team competing in the Champions League next term.
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move to sign the 26-year-old defender throughout the summer transfer window so far.
The Merseyside outfit were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton about their pursuit of the former Celtic defender.
Premier League champions Chelsea are also interested in the Dutch defender as Antonio Conte looks to improve his defensive options before deadline day.
Sky Sports News reporter Solhekol shed light on Van Dijk’s determination to leave the Saints as Southampton prepare to start their Premier League campaign without their club captain.
“Let’s start with one of the stories of the window so far and that of course concerns Virgil van Dijk,” Solhekol told Sky Sports News on Friday morning.
“He wants to leave Southampton, they don’t want to sell him. He handed in a transfer request on Monday. He’s been training away from the first-team squad.
“Southampton are in a strong position on this – because Van Dijk signed a new six-year deal last summer. He won’t be involved against Swansea on Saturday because he has a virus.”
Van Dijk moved to Southampton in a £15m deal from Scottish Premier League champions Celtic in the 2015 summer transfer window.
The Netherlands star has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League over the past 24 months.
Van Dijk missed the second half of the season with a serious knee injury.
