Liverpool told top 26-year-old defender is at the same level as Vincent Kompany
Joleon Lescott delivers a glowing verdict on Virgil van Dijk amid talk of a move to Liverpool or Chelsea this summer
Joleon Lescott believes Virgil van Dijk is similar to Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany as Liverpool continue to be linked with the Southampton skipper.
The Reds are thought to be in the market to sign a centre-half in the summer transfer window but the Merseyside outfit have struggled to get a deal over the line for the 26-year-old.
Liverpool were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton about their pursuit of the Netherlands international earlier in the summer transfer window.
However, the Merseyside outfit have continued to be linked with a move to sign the Dutch centre-half, although the Reds could face competition from Chelsea.
Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League since moving to Southampton from SPL champions Celtic in a £15m deal in 2015.
Lescott played alongside Belgium international Kompany for five seasons before the ex-England international moved to Aston Villa three seasons ago.
Speaking to Sky Sports News about the Chelsea and Liverpool target on Monday, former Manchester City defender Lescott said:
“In terms of Van Dijk, I think he is one of the best.
“I see a lot of similarities with Vincent Kompany, obviously Vincent has been touted as probably the best centre-half when he’s fit and consistent throughout the season.
“I think Virgil is up with him as well.”
Van Dijk has scored seven goals in 68 games in all competitions over the past two seasons at St Mary’s.
Liverpool have signed three players in the summer transfer window so far.
