Ian Wright sends warning to Liverpool about signing proven 26-year-old
The Arsenal legend says Liverpool need more than just Virgil van Dijk to solve their long-running defensive issues
Ian Wright has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool need more signings than just Virgil van Dijk.
The Reds have been linked with a move to sign the Netherlands international in the summer transfer window but a deal has failed to materialise so far.
Liverpool were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton about their pursuit of the Dutch centre-half before officially pulling out of the race for the Saints star back in June.
The Merseyside outfit are still being linked with a move to sign the 26-year-old defender but face competition from Premier League champions Chelsea and title contenders Manchester City.
Liverpool made an uncertain start to the new Premier League campaign after the Reds conceded a late equaliser in a 3-3 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon.
Former Arsenal striker Wright believes Liverpool need more defensive signings than just Van Dijk if the 18-time English champions are to improve their back four.
“They’re really trying for Virgil van Dijk,” Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live. “[But] you have to say they need more.”
Liverpool have signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke and Hull City defender Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window.
The Reds will take on Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the first leg of their Champions League play-off on Tuesday night.
