Steven Gerrard urges Liverpool to push through deal to sign top 26-year-old
Steven Gerrard admits that he would love to see Liverpool tie up a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk this summer
Steven Gerrard has urged Liverpool to do what needs to be done to push through a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer.
The Reds have been relentlessly linked with a move to sign Van Dijk this summer as Jurgen Klopp ponders bolstering his defensive options at Anfield.
Liverpool were thought to be close to tying up a deal to sign Van Dijk back in June but a move fell through after Southampton accused the Reds of an alleged illegal approach.
However, Liverpool continue to be touted as a possible destination for the defender despite Southampton’s insistence that he is not for sale this summer.
And former Liverpool skipper Gerrard is still hoping that the Reds will be able to sign Van Dijk, after revealing that he was a keen admirer of the defender even before he signed for Southampton.
Gerrard told BT Sport: “I think he’s an amazing player, he would strengthen any team in the league, for sure.
“From what I’ve seen at Celtic, from what I’ve seen at Southampton…I was actually hoping we’d come in with a bid from him when he came from Celtic.
“It was no surprise to me that he set to world alight at Southampton, and you can understand why the fee is going to be huge if he eventually gets his transfer over the line.
“You think of all of the top-six teams, he would make them all better.”
Liverpool, who finished fourth last season, are currently preparing for their Premier League home clash against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds slumped to a disappointing 3-3 draw with Watford in their opening top-flight game of the season at Vicarage Road last weekend.
