Jamie Redknapp: Chelsea ‘gutted’ Liverpool signed 19-year-old striker
The former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Dominic Solanke will be a huge hit at Anfield
Jamie Redknapp has revealed that Chelsea were “gutted” Liverpool signed Dominic Solanke from the Premier League champions.
The Reds agreed a deal to sign the 19-year-old forward for a tribunal fee from the west London side back in June.
Solanke scored three goals and was named player of the tournament as England’s Under-20 side won the World Cup earlier this summer.
The teenager has also impressed during Liverpool’s pre-season campaign with goals against Hertha Berlin and Athletic Bilbao.
The Liverpool signing didn’t make a first-team appearance despite progressing through the youth ranks over the past 14 seasons.
Solanke scored seven goals in 25 appearances during a season-long loan stint at Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem.
Former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp is confident that Solanke will prove a big hit at the Merseyside outfit.
“Dominic Solanke has gone under the radar. He has so much potential. He will be one to watch,” Redknapp told The Debate on Sky Sports on Monday night.
“I know Chelsea were gutted to let him go. He can be a real star for Liverpool.”
Solanke has been handed the no29 shirt at Liverpool following his summer move to the five-time European champions.
Liverpool have also signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah and Hull City defender Andy Robertson.
The Reds finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will start their Premier League campaign with a trip to Watford.
