Liverpool told to sign proven 26-year-old right now
Jamie Redknapp urges Liverpool to make a new bid to try and sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton
Jamie Redknapp has urged Liverpool to push through a deal to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton this summer.
The Southampton defender’s future has been a relentless source of speculation this summer after he was heavily linked with a move to Anfield at the start of the transfer window.
Liverpool were thought to be close to landing Van Dijk but were forced to issue a statement apologising to Southampton after being accused of an alleged illegal approach back in June.
However, Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for the Netherlands defender, who has been training alone and who has handed in a transfer request at St Mary’s.
The Reds conceded three goals as they were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw with Watford in their opening Premier League game of the season at Vicarage Road on Saturday.
And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp told the Reds to make a move to sign Van Dijk after their disappointing defensive display against the Hornets.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle on Saturday, Redknapp said: “He’s better than what they’ve got, that’s why I’m saying they should get him.
“I’m saying 100 per cent he would (make a difference).
“As that ball comes in, Matip sort of ducks out of the way. You can see him there, No 32, I don’t think he’s in a great position there.
“He’s facing the ball, he’s not really turning his shoulder and you can see Okaka come into that area.
“Does he jump? Does he do anything? Not really.
“Look at (Younes) Kaboul get above him, look at Okaka get above him.
“I just see Virgil van Dijk making a big difference to that back four. You want leaders and people to attack the ball.”
Liverpool have signed three players so far this summer, after having wrapped up deals for Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andy Robertson.
The Reds are gearing up for their Champions League play-off clash against Hoffenheim on Tuesday night.
