Jamie Carragher responds to speculation Philippe Coutinho could leave Liverpool
The Liverpool legend expects the Reds to get another 12 months out of Philippe Coutinho despite interest from La Liga giants Barcelona
Jamie Carragher has ruled out Philippe Coutinho leaving Liverpool to move to Barcelona in the summer transfer window.
The Brazil international has been linked with a potential switch to the La Liga giants over the past couple of weeks despite Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insisting the attacker is not for sale.
Barcelona are thought to be ready to sign Coutinho as a natural replacement for Neymar after the striker completed a world-record £198m move to Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain last week.
The 25-year-old has established himself as a key member of Klopp’s team since the former Borussia Dortmund coach took over the reins from Brendan Rodgers at Anfield back in October 2015.
Coutinho netted 13 times and made seven assists in the Premier League last season to help the Reds to secure a top-four finish and a place in the Champions League last term.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher is optimistic that Coutinho will remain at the Merseyside outfit beyond transfer deadline day despite the lure of Barcelona.
“In terms of the situation now with Coutinho, not a chance of him going really,” Carragher told The Debate on Sky Sports on Monday night.
“This window has not been good for Liverpool, which has not helped, and there would be a riot against the owners and the club if he went because this transfer window has not gone how Liverpool wanted.
“They wanted Van Dijk, they wanted Keita. Liverpool do not need money, they have big money.
“Klopp has not spent anything really since he came in terms of net spend, so there is a lot of money there for Liverpool to spend.
“So the money is there, they do not need the money. And I just think they can get 12 more months out of Coutinho.”
Coutinho netted seven times and made three assists in Liverpool’s final 10 games to help the Reds see off the challenge of Arsenal for a fourth-place finish last term.
Liverpool will start the 2017-18 Premier League season with a trip to Watford on Saturday afternoon.
