Phil Neville singled out Nemanja Matic for special praise after Manchester United eased to a 4-0 win against West Ham on Sunday.

The Red Devils started the new Premier League campaign with the chance to move ahead of title rivals Chelsea and Liverpool after the pair dropped points on Saturday.

Matic moved to Manchester United in a £40m deal from Premier League champions Chelsea earlier this month in a deal that raised eyebrows given the defensive midfielder’s importance to the west London side.

The Serbia international was part of two Chelsea title-winning teams before opting to reunite with his ex-Blues boss Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Matic was Manchester United’s best player in an otherwise disappointing 2-1 loss to La Liga champions Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United midfielder’s Old Trafford debut was overshadowed by Romelu Lukaku’s two goals against the Hammers in their Premier League opener on Sunday afternoon.

However, the club’s former defender Neville was impressed with Matic’s display in the centre of the pitch.

Neville wrote on Twitter: “Matic started unbelievable”

France striker Anthony Martial scored Manchester United’s third goal before Paul Pogba wrapped up a 4-0 victory over the Hammers.

Manchester United have signed Portuguese defender Victor Lindelof, Lukaku and Matic in the summer transfer window so far.

The Red Devils finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.
