Antonio Conte sends message to Man United about new signing
Antonio Conte admits that the sale of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United is a 'great loss' for Chelsea
Antonio Conte has admitted that Manchester United’s signing of Nemanja Matic from Chelsea is a “great loss” to the Blues.
The 29-year-old became Manchester United’s third signing of the summer last week when he completed a big-money move to Old Trafford despite playing a key role in Chelsea’s Premier League title triumph last season.
Matic knows Jose Mourinho well, having worked under the Portuguese coach at Chelsea before his sacking back in December 2015.
The Serbian made his first competitive appearance for the Red Devils on Tuesday night when he started for Manchester United in their 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup in Macedonia.
Chelsea made the decision to sell Matic to their title rivals after they recruited Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco earlier this summer.
But the Chelsea manager admits that the sale of Matic still comes at a big price for the Premier League champions.
Speaking to Sky Sports News on Wednesday, Conte said: “Matic knows very well what I think about him.
“The importance for me about this player, who is a really good player, a top player, very important for our team, but sometimes you must accept this crazy transfer market.
“And sometimes you must accept different decisions. But he is a great loss for us.”
Chelsea are currently preparing for their Premier League opener against Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon as they look to kick off their title defence with a win.
The Blues are also gearing up for a return to the Champions League this season after their title triumph last term.
