Pat Nevin backs Man United forward to have huge role under Jose Mourinho
The former Chelsea winger is backing Marcus Rashford to have an important role to play under Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho
Pat Nevin has reassured Manchester United supporters that Marcus Rashford still has a bright future at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils signed Belgium international Romelu Lukaku in a £75m deal from Everton in the summer transfer window to see off competition from Chelsea for the striker’s signature.
Lukaku’s arrival has pushed Rashford further down the pecking order and Manchester United confirmed Zlatan Ibrahimovic has re-signed with the Red Devils for another season on Thursday.
Rashford struggled to hold down a regular starting spot under Jose Mourinho last term after the teenager impressed during Louis van Gaal’s final season in charge at Old Trafford.
The England international had a big role to play in the Europa League as Rashford helped Manchester United to win the competition and secure a return to the Champions League.
Rashford has started both of Manchester United’s Premier League games this season but the 19-year-old is still waiting to score his first goal of the new campaign.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Rashford will be an important wide player for Mourinho to help create space for Lukaku, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata.
“I think Rashford will always do a job,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“If he’s not scoring goals, he’s running into positions, He isn’t a natural goal-scorer. I’ve never thought he is a centre-forward.
“There are a lot [of] better centre-forwards than Rashford to play up front. If you play Rashford wide, he stretches everything. He creates space for Lukaku, Pogba an Rashford to run into.”
Rashford scored 11 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions last term.
