The Red Devils were initially linked with a deal to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata at the start of the summer transfer window.
However, Manchester United sprung a surprise last month when the Red Devils managed to hijack Chelsea’s proposed deal to sign Everton striker Lukaku.
The Belgian forward became the club’s second most-expensive player of all-time after Manchester United coughed up a £75m deal to sign the 24-year-old from the Toffees.
Lukaku scored on his competitive debut in a 2-1 loss to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup final in Macedonia earlier this month.
The Manchester United summer signing netted twice in a 4-0 victory over West Ham United in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
While Lukaku’s former managers at Chelsea, Everton and West Brom have struggled to consistently get the best out of Lukaku despite the forward’s obvious talents.
Former Arsenal defender Keown believes Mourinho is the ideal manager to get the best out of the £75m signing.
“Lukaku and Mourinho could be a perfect marriage between player and manager,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“I don’t think I’ve heard managers talk about an individual more than Lukaku in the last few years. At Everton, Ronald Koeman and Roberto Martinez kept talking about how to get the best from Lukaku.
“Mourinho hasn’t had to say a thing — he has just put him on the biggest platform and the player has come up with two cracking goals.
“Now, Lukaku has got to keep producing. He has the ability to destroy defences but cannot pick and choose when to make runs.”
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season.
