Garth Crooks has warned Jose Mourinho that Eric Bailly looks like a nervous Manchester United defender.

The Ivory Coast international moved to the Red Devils in a £30m deal from La Liga giants Villarreal in the 2016 summer transfer window.

Bailly made a promising start to the 2016-17 season but the African defender suffered a serious knee problem in a 4-0 loss to Chelsea back in October 2016.

The 23-year-old defender made 25 appearances in his first Premier League campaign as the Red Devils won the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

Bailly got on the score sheet in Manchester United 4-0 win against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Ivorian broke the deadlock in the first half before late goals from Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial in south Wales.

Former Spurs legend Crooks believes Bailly is still capable of producing nervous moments in the Manchester United defence.

“I want to like this player, but he always gives me the ‘willies’,” Crooks told BBC Sport.

“Eric Bailly, on his day, is a class act – a point clearly demonstrated against Swansea – but why does he give me a sense of nervous apprehension every time he plays?

“I can’t help feeling he’s a tackle away from a red card or giving a penalty away.

“Against the likes of Swansea he will be fine, but it’s in the big games, when it really matters, that I find myself asking the question: can he be trusted?”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season in their first season under Mourinho.

The Red Devils have won 4-0 in their last two games against West Ham United and Swansea City.

Mourinho signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.
