Gary Neville sends warning to Man United boss Jose Mourinho about the title
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville says Jose Mourinho needs to challenge for the Premier League title this season
Gary Neville has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United should win the Premier League this season.
The Red Devils were 4-0 winners against West Ham United in their opening Premier League game of the 2017-18 campaign at Old Trafford.
Romelu Lukaku scored either side of half-time to give Manchester United a commanding 2-0 lead against the Hammers.
Late goals from Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba helped the Red Devils to ease to three points in their Premier League opener.
Manchester United are sitting at the top of the Premier League table following their commanding 4-0 victory.
The Red Devils haven’t won the top-flight crown since Sir Alex Ferguson won his final Premier League crown in 2013.
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season but won the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.
Former Manchester United defender Neville warned Mourinho that expectations haven’t dropped at Old Trafford despite a tough spell since Ferguson’s retirement.
“You can’t just drop your expectation because they haven’t won it for a couple of years. They have to win the league. Jose Mourinho has to win the league here,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“The money that’s been spent, his own personal expectations and what he’s always delivered has been titles, so I would say United have to approach this season to win the league.
“I don’t think it’s good enough to say ‘they’re going to get back into fourth’. That isn’t an ambition when you’ve spent the money that’s been spent and amassed the players that Mourinho has now amassed.”
Manchester United were 2-0 winners against Ajax in the Europa League final in Stockholm at the end of the 2016-17 season.
The Red Devils booked their place in the Champions League this term thanks to Manchester United’s title triumph.
Mourinho has signed Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba in the summer transfer window.
