Martin Keown sends message to Man United fans about Jose Mourinho
The Arsenal legend wants to see Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho take off the handbrake this season
Jose Mourinho must take off the handbrake and allow his Manchester United team to show some attacking adventure this term, according to Martin Keown.
The Portuguese coach is starting his second Premier League season in charge of the Red Devils after Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s successor last term.
However, Mourinho was unable to match Manchester United’s fifth-place finish in their final season under the Dutch coach, with the Red Devils ending up in sixth spot in the 2016-17 season.
The new Manchester United boss did manage to win the EFL Cup and the Europa League, which secured their spot in the upcoming Champions League campaign after a one-season absence.
Mourinho has signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic in the summer transfer window so far.
Former Arsenal defender Keown wants to see Manchester United improving going forwards this term after Bournemouth outscored the Red Devils last term.
“Emerged from his first season with flying colours by winning two trophies,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“The Europa League triumph means United return to Europe’s top table but fans will grow frustrated if Mourinho does not take off the handbrake and give his team licence to attack.”
Manchester United lost 2-1 to Champions League holders Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup in Macedonia on Tuesday night, before their thumping 4-0 win over West Ham on Sunday.
