Pat Nevin believes Jose Mourinho is building his Manchester United team in the likeness of some of the manager’s great Chelsea title-winning sides.

The Red Devils appointed Mourinho as their new manager last summer after Louis van Gaal led Manchester United to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League table.

The Portuguese coach endured a mixed first season in charge at Old Trafford after Manchester United finished in sixth spot but won the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

Mourinho has signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils will be hoping to challenge for their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson stood down as manager in 2013.

Mourinho won the Premier League crown three times with Chelsea after he steered the Blues to the top-flight title in 2015.

Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Mourinho is putting together a powerful Manchester United team to rival some of his best Blues sides.

“It’s a team that looks like a Jose Mourinho team now,” Nevin told Irish radio station Newstalk.

“When he gets them in his image, he is phenomenally successful. That Manchester United team doesn’t look unlike some of his great Chelsea teams. That power, the directness through the middle…”

Manchester United will start their Premier League campaign with a home clash against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils lost 2-1 to La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday night.
