Paul Scholes confident Man United signing will add more aggression than Michael Carrick
The Manchester United legend believes Nemanja Matic will give Jose Mourinho's midfield more of an aggressive streak
Paul Scholes believes Nemanja Matic can bring more aggression to the Manchester United midfield than Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils signed Matic in a £40m deal from Premier League champions Chelsea last week to bolster their midfield options.
The Serbia international arrives at Old Trafford with a wealth of experience having won the title twice during his second stint at Stamford Bridge.
Matic was part of Jose Mourinho’s title-winning team in 2014-15 after the Portuguese side re-signed the Serb in a £21m deal from Portuguese champions Benfica in January 2014.
The holding midfielder was a key member of Antonio Conte’s team last season as Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare in the Italian’s first season in charge.
Matic will compete with club captain Carrick and Belgium international Marouane Fellaini for a place in the Manchester United team in the 2017-18 season.
Former Manchester United midfiedler Scholes believes Matic will bring a more aggressive edge to Mourinho’s team.
Scholes told BT Sport: “I think he’s very similar in a way to Michael Carrick.
“He’s a controlling midfielder but what he brings which Michael doesn’t is a little bit of aggression. He gets to the ball, he tackles, he allows other people to play.”
Manchester United lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup in Macedonia on Tuesday night.
The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in 2013.
