Denis Irwin predicts 23-year-old will fire Man United to the title
Denis Irwin is confident Paul Pogba can lead Manchester United to their first Premier League title since 2013
Denis Irwin is confident Paul Pogba can fire Manchester United to Premier League title glory next season.
The France international is set to embark on his second season under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford following his return to the Manchester club last summer.
The Red Devils spent a then world-record £89m fee on the 23-year-old midfielder to re-sign their former youth graduate from Serie A champions Juventus.
Pogba, though, struggled to replicate his Serie A form in the Premier League which led to criticism of the France midfielder from some ex-professionals.
The Manchester United number six finished the season with five goals and eight assists in 47 appearances in all competitions in a mixed 2016-17 campaign.
The eccentric midfielder did score Manchester United’s opening goal in a 2-0 victory over Ajax in the Europa League final to secure a place in the Champions League.
Former Manchester United defender Irwin is confident that Pogba has what it takes to propel the Red Devils to their first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
“I expect Paul Pogba to be a really powerful player this year,” said Irwin, speaking on behalf of Marathonbet, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.
“I expect Manchester United to challenge for the title. More consistency is needed. We drew too many [last season] and I think more goals are needed from different areas.
“Last season there was an over-reliance on Zlatan. Rashford, I think, will score more goals.”
Manchester United won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in their first season under the management of Mourinho after the Portuguese coach replaced Louis van Gaal in May 2016.
