Steve Nicol sends warning to Man United about new signing
The Liverpool legend suggest Romelu Lukaku could struggle to be the focal point of the Manchester United team
Steve Nicol has warned Manchester United that Romelu Lukaku could struggle as the focal point of Jose Mourinho’s team.
The Red Devils signed the Belgium striker in a £75m deal from Everton last month after seeing off competition from Premier League champions Chelsea.
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season – only Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane scored more times than the new Manchester United signing.
However, the 24-year-old’s ability to have an impact in big games has been regularly questioned over the past couple of seasons.
Speaking to ESPN FC about Lukaku and his role in the Manchester United team, former Liverpool defender Nicol admitted that he has some concerns about the striker.
“We don’t know how Lukaku will react having to be the focal point of Man United,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“There is a difference [between] doing that role at Everton and Man United.”
Lukaku moved to Everton in a £27m deal from Chelsea in 2014 after Mourinho failed to guarantee the striker regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge.
The Portuguese coach has now signed the Everton star to help fill the goal void left by Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Manchester United also signed Swedish defender Victor Lindelof and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.
The Red Devils will take on Champions League holders Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup on Tuesday night.
