Paul Merson predicts where Man United, Liverpool will finish
Paul Merson delivers his verdict on Manchester United and Liverpool ahead of the 2017-18 season
Paul Merson believes that Manchester United will finish fourth in the Premier League this season – one place ahead of Liverpool.
The Red Devils are currently gearing up for their second season under new manager Jose Mourinho following his appointment at Old Trafford last summer.
Manchester United will be sure to be keen to build on their disappointing sixth-placed finish in the Premier League in Mourinho’s second campaign in charge at the club.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will also be hoping to finish in the top four this season after Jurgen Klopp led them back into the Champions League spots last term.
Former Arsenal star Merson is tipping Manchester United to pip Liverpool to a top-four finish, because he is expecting to see Philippe Coutinho leave Anfield this summer.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Merson said: “I’m going fourth now for United, but that could change by the end of the transfer window.
“I say that because I think Philippe Coutinho leaves Liverpool. In football, if Real Madrid or Barcelona come in for you, you’re leaving. It’s very rare someone rejects them, and that’s my worry for Liverpool. If Coutinho stays, I think Liverpool could finish above Manchester United, and they’re top four.
“But I say top four, I really think there won’t be many points between any of these teams. It’s phenomenal this year, any team can go and do something.”
Manchester United are currently gearing up for their crunch Uefa Super Cup clash against Real Madrid on Tuesday night, before turning their attentions towards their Premier League opener against West Ham United next weekend.
The Red Devils managed to secure a return to the Champions League for this season after they won the Europa League final against Ajax back in May.
