Jose Mourinho has hailed Nemanja Matic as a “genius” following the midfielder’s transfer to Manchester United from Chelsea this week.

The Serbian midfielder completed his move to Old Trafford from Chelsea on Monday after weeks of speculation linking him with a move to the Red Devils.

The 28-year-old midfielder will be hoping to help Mourinho’s men mount a serious Premier League title challenge next season while also challenging for the Champions League.

And Mourinho has expressed his delight at seeing Manchester United be able to complete a deal to bring Matic to Old Trafford this summer.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday night in Dublin, Mourinho said: “He needs time but (his) experience, intelligence, a genius in the way he thinks – he thinks football.

“We will help him to be ready sooner rather than later.”

Mourinho knows Matic well as the pair both won the EFL Cup and Premier League together in the 2014-15 season with Chelsea.

The Red Devils will be aiming to improve on their sixth-placed finish in the Premier League table next season as they look to win the title for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement back in 2013.

Manchester United kick off their Premier League campaign with a clash against West Ham United on 13 August at Old Trafford after their Uefa Super Cup clash against Real Madrid on 8 August.
