Nemanja Matic has heaped praise on Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian striker made a sparkling start to his Manchester United career.

The 24-year-old was named as the man of the match as he scored twice in Manchester United’s thumping 4-0 win over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Lukaku joined Manchester United in a £75m deal from Everton last month and looks like he will not need much time to adapt to life under Jose Mourinho at his new club.

And Matic, who also made his Old Trafford debut for Manchester United against West Ham on Sunday, was hugely impressed by Lukaku’s start to life in a Red Devils shirt.

Matic told Manchester United’s website: “I am happy for him – not only that he scored goals – but his amazing all-round game as well. He saved a lot of balls and he gave us self-confidence up front.

“It was very important for us that he scored his first two goals and, after that, it was easier for us to play, the game was more open, and there was more space to use. I’m happy for him and that we have him on the team, and I’m sure he will continue his form.”

Both Matic and Lukaku will be hoping to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action with a trip to Swansea City on Saturday lunchtime.

The Red Devils are aiming to improve their Premier League form this season after they ended up in a disappointing sixth place last term.

However, Mourinho did lead Manchester United to the EFL Cup and Europa League trophies in his first campaign in charge at the club.
