Gary Lineker reacts to Romelu Lukaku’s display in Man United v Real Madrid
The Tottenham legend is backing Romelu Lukaku to be a success at Man United after his first competitive goal
Gary Lineker backed Romelu Lukaku to be a big hit at Manchester United after the striker’s first competitive goal in a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup.
The Belgium international is Manchester United’s biggest signing of the summer transfer window so far after the Red Devils saw off competition from Premier League champions Chelsea.
Manchester United signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Everton to help replace the goal void left by club captain Wayne Rooney and Swedish legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Jose Mourinho handed the former Chelsea striker his first competitive start against Champions League holders Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup in Macedonia on Tuesday night.
Lukaku missed a great chance to halve the deficit early in the second half following goals from Casemiro and Isco put los Blancos in charge of the European clash.
However, the 24-year-old levelled with a close-range finish after the summer signing reacted quickest when Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas deflected Nemanja Matic’s long-range shot into the striker’s path.
Former England and Tottenham Hotspur striker Lineker is backing Lukaku to prove a big hit at Old Trafford despite concerns about the Manchester United signing’s big-game mentality.
Lineker wrote on his Twitter page: “He might miss a few, but Lukaku will score a lot for @ManUtd”
Lukaku scored 25 times in 36 games in the Premier League last season.
