Paul Parker questions why Man United want to sign top 28-year-old attacker
Man United legend Paul Parker questions why the Red Devils would sign Gareth Bale under Jose Mourinho
Paul Parker believes Gareth Bale would struggle to thrive in the Manchester United team under Jose Mourinho.
The Wales international’s future at The Bernabeu has been a source of debate in recent weeks after it emerged Real Madrid could sell Bale to accommodate Monaco teenager Kylian Mbappe.
The 28-year-old has regularly been linked with a move to Manchester United over the past couple of summers but a transfer has failed to materialise.
Bale endured an injury-hit 2016-17 campaign to limit the Welsh star to 17 starts and two substitute appearances in La Liga last season.
The former Tottenham Hotspur forward missed out on a starting spot in Zinedine Zidane’s line-up for the Champions League final in Cardiff last season.
Bale was a second-half substitute as Real Madrid eased to a 4-1 win against Serie A giants Juventus in the European showpiece in the forward’s native Wales.
Former Manchester United defender Parker has questioned whether Bale’s style would suit a Mourinho team amid talk of the Red Devils signing the Real Madrid star.
“You have to wonder where Gareth Bale would play,” said Parker, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“There is a lot of talk about getting him because everyone now has to go out and get an expensive player. But you have to look at where you can fit him in to get the best out of him.
“Gareth likes to play through the middle: he doesn’t like that wide role he had at Tottenham and prefers to step inside. So you’d have to adjust the team.
“I look at Bale and wonder if he’s a Jose Mourinho type of player because he likes a lot of touches, he wants to run with the ball. At Real Madrid he doesn’t track back so that’s something else he’d have to add to his game.
“Does he really want to play for Manchester United and have to track back because he hasn’t now for three or four seasons so long as he delivers going the other way.
“It’s all very well talking about these players but sometimes you have to ask yourself does the player suit the formation and does he even want to play there?”
Bale moved to Real Madrid in an £85.3m deal from Tottenham Hotspur in the 2013 summer transfer window.
Manchester United have signed Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic in the summer so far.
