Paul Parker has warned Manchester United supporters that Anthony Martial needs to leave Old Trafford to “put a smile back on his face”.

The France international has been linked with a potential move in the summer transfer window despite moving to Manchester United in a £36m deal in 2015.

Martial struggled to adapt to life under new manager Jose Mourinho last season as the Manchester United boss regularly criticised the 21-year-old for his below-par performances.

The former AS Monaco forward scored seven times in 42 appearances in all competitions last season, although Martial only started 18 times in the Premier League.

Inter Milan are thought to be interested in signing the promising attacker as Manchester United look to sign Croatia international Ivan Perisic from the Serie A giants.

Former Manchester United defender Parker believes Martial needs a change of environment to rekindle his passion.

“When you look at him as a player he really doesn’t look like he’s enjoying himself,” said Parker, speaking exclusively to 888sport.

“If anyone could tell me that they’ve seen him smile on a pitch then I’d say they must have a 200 inch television that’s picked up the slightest flicker at the side of his mouth.

“You don’t see him play with any smile on his face. There is nothing in him and he’s not relishing the challenge. He’s not doing enough and isn’t proactive, he reacts.

“You need that little bit more because he came to Manchester United with the same hype as Kylian Mbappe. He was a wonderkid, he was French, he was black, so suddenly he was the next Thierry Henry.

“I really don’t see him getting an advert for Clio at this moment in time. He needs a change, to get a smile on his face and enjoy his job.

“He’s a young boy at the best club he can be at but he’s not enjoying it and Manchester United is not a nice place when you’re under pressure and not playing all the time.

“The manager tells you to deliver and every time you go out and play you feel you have to do something exciting and prove yourself.

“Really he needs to keep it simple. If it’s one v one then take them on but if there are two then give it square and move.”

Parker added: “He’s got great pace but he only wants to sprint when he has the ball. When Andrei Kanchelski was playing in front of me he was renowned for his running off the ball. He made so many goals and chances by making the run first. He has to start learning to do that.”

Martial moved to Manchester United in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal.

The France star scored 11 times in 49 games in all competitions in his first season at Old Trafford, including a goal against bitter rivals Liverpool on his Premier League debut.
