Gary Neville sends sharp message to Chelsea about Man United signing
Manchester United legend Gary Neville questions Chelsea's decision to sell Nemanja Matic to their direct title rivals
Gary Neville admits he can’t think of one reason why Chelsea decided to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United.
The Red Devils signed Matic in a £40m transfer from Premier League champions Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
The west London side made the decision to sell the Serbia international to their direct title rivals despite Matic’s influential role over the past three seasons.
Matic was part of Jose Mourinho’s team that won the Premier League title and the EFL Cup in the 2014-15 season.
The defensive midfielder was also part of the Chelsea team that won the Premier League crown with two games to spare last term in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge.
Matic was one of Manchester United’s standout players in Sunday afternoon’s 4-0 victory over West Ham United in their Premier League opener at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Former Manchester United defender Neville is still confused about Chelsea’s decision to sell 29-year-old midfielder in the current transfer window.
“You cannot believe Chelsea have given Mourinho a piece of the jigsaw in Matic,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“I can’t think of one reason why Chelsea sold him.
“United beat Chelsea to Lukaku and then Chelsea have handed them Matic. They look like the type of players that were needed to correct what was wrong last season, and Chelsea have helped them and had a big influence on that.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season.
The Red Devils won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in their first campaign under Mourinho.
Mourinho has signed three players in the summer transfer window so far.
