The Arsenal legend urges Antonio Conte to get control of the situation at Chelsea
Martin Keown says Antonio Conte needs to get control of the situation at Chelsea quickly.
The Premier League champions have endured a controversial summer transfer window despite winning the Premier League title with two games to spare last term.
Conte sent Costa a text message following their title success to inform the controversial Spanish striker that he is surplus to requirements ahead of the 2017-18 season.
Chelsea have failed to offload the 29-year-old forward in the summer transfer window despite reported interest from Atletico Madrid and AC Milan.
The Blues head coach has struggled to get some deals over the line for their top targets despite signing Alvaro Morata, Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko.
Nemanja Matic, meanwhile, moved to their bitter rivals Manchester United from Chelsea in a £40m deal earlier this month.
Chelsea made a disastrous start to the new season after the nine-man English champions succumbed to a surprise 3-2 loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
Former Arsenal defender Keown urged Conte to take control over the situation ahead of Chelsea’s trip to title rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League game on Sunday.
“Whatever happens, the Costa issue must be resolved quickly,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Chelsea players are starting to sympathise with him — they may well be worrying that they could be placed in a similar situation.
“Chelsea showed a lot of character to get back into the game on Saturday but there was plenty of ill-discipline, too.
“Conte needs to have a good look at himself and take charge of the situation.”
