Paul Merson states his prediction for Tottenham v Chelsea
Paul Merson is tipping Chelsea to earn a 1-1 draw from their trip to Tottenham on Sunday
Paul Merson is backing Chelsea to earn a 1-1 draw from their trip to Tottenham on Sunday afternoon.
The Blues are looking to bounce back from a disastrous start to the new campaign after they lost 3-2 to Burnley last weekend and had two men sent off.
Chelsea will be without the suspended Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas as Tottenham prepare for their first Premier League game at Wembley this season.
However, former Arsenal star Merson is backing Spurs and Chelsea to share the spoils in north London on Sunday afternoon.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “Chelsea won’t lose here. I think both teams will be more than happy with a draw.
“You have to remember that the last thing Tottenham want to do is lose this game – their first at Wembley this season – and Chelsea can’t afford to lose a second game on the bounce.
“Both teams will be nervous and I think it will be quite cagey.
“If not a draw I would probably go Chelsea. I was not impressed with Tottenham at Newcastle, I thought they were poor.”
Chelsea are looking to defend their Premier League title this season after they won the Premier League in Antonio Conte’s first campaign at the club last term.
The Blues, who have signed four new players so far this summer, are also gearing up for a return to the Champions League this term after their impressive title triumph.
Tottenham, meanwhile, will be playing all of their home games at Wembley this season as the redevelopment of White Hart Lane continues.
Spurs finished in second place in the Premier League table after challenging Chelsea for the title for much of the campaign.
