Paul Merson is tipping Tottenham to finish in third place in the Premier League table this season.

Spurs are the only team in the Premier League not to have made any new signings so far this summer as they prepare for the 2017-18 campaign.

Tottenham were Chelsea’s closest challengers for the Premier League title last season as they ended up in second place in the table.

However, questions have been raised about Spurs’ lack of transfer activity this summer, with the Lilywhites also set to play their home games at Wembley while the redevelopment of White Hart Lane continues.

Despite that, former Arsenal star Merson is backing Spurs to have enough to secure a third-placed finish in the Premier League this season.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Merson said: “If Tottenham were playing at White Hart Lane I’d have them as champions. They’ve got the best team, they haven’t had to buy anybody. They will miss Walker surging forward, but Kieran Trippier is a great replacement.

“I just think of them playing away from home for 38 games; they didn’t have the greatest away record last year but had a superb home record.

“They worry me in that sense, but I still think they could finish third. They do need a couple more squad players before the end of the window, however.”

Tottenham are also preparing for a return to the Champions League this season after they finished in second place last term.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men will kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon as they look to get their season off to a winning start.
