Paul Merson states prediction for Tottenham v Chelsea
Paul Merson looks ahead to Chelsea's Premier League clash with Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday
Paul Merson believes that Chelsea would take a draw from their Premier League clash against Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday.
The Blues head into the game looking to bounce back from their shock 3-2 loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge last weekend as they suffered a disappointing defeat in front of their home fans.
Tottenham, meanwhile, kicked off their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park last Sunday.
Spurs will be playing all of their home games at Wembley this season as they wait for the redevelopment of White Hart Lane to be completed.
However, despite Chelsea’s stuttering start to the new campaign, former Arsenal star Merson seems to still be backing the champions to enjoy a strong season.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Spurs are playing at full strength but they didn’t look like scoring in a month of Sundays against Newcastle until Jonjo Shelvey was sent off.
“I think they would take a draw on Sunday. They will be desperate not to lose in their first game at Wembley otherwise it will be, ‘Oh, Spurs can’t win there’, all over again.
“But I think Chelsea will probably be happy with a draw as well after losing to Burnley in their opening game.
“You can’t write them off yet, though, despite Antonio Conte moaning about not having enough players.”
Chelsea are preparing for a return to the Champions League next month after they missed out on a place in Europe’s elite club competition last season.
The Blues, who finished 10th in the season before, won the title last term but missed out on a domestic double when they were beaten by Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
