Paul Merson states his prediction for Watford v Liverpool
Paul Merson looks ahead to Liverpool's Premier League opener against Watford on Saturday lunchtime
Paul Merson is backing Liverpool to get off to a flying start in the Premier League by beating Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road on Saturday lunchtime.
The Reds are currently preparing for their second full season under new manager Jurgen Klopp as they bid to try and challenge for the Premier League title this term.
Klopp successfully led Liverpool to Champions League qualification via a top-four finish last season, with the Reds set to take on Hoffenheim in the play-off round of the Champions League later this month.
Liverpool will be hoping to make a positive start to the new campaign when they take on Watford this weekend.
And Merson is fully expecting to see the Reds start the season with a comfortable 3-0 win at Vicarage Road on Saturday lunchtime.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson said: “I cannot see anything but a Liverpool win. I worry for Watford and have predicted them to get relegated – and nothing has changed after the Andre Gray signing.
“I fear there may not be space for Troy Deeney at Watford after that signing and that’s a huge worry because he’s by far their best player.
“Liverpool have been impressive in pre-season, beating Bayern Munich 3-0, and I expect them to inflict the same score on the Hornets.”
Liverpool have never won the Premier League title and will be hoping to mount a serious title challenge this season.
The Reds had looked like they would challenge for the trophy in the first half of last season, but they eventually ended up fourth after their form dropped off in the second half of the campaign.
