Antonio Conte reacts to 17-year-old’s display in Chelsea’s 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest
The Chelsea manager was impressed with Ethan Ampadu's debut performance in Wednesday night's 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest
Antonio Conte singled out Ethan Ampadu for special praise after the Welsh starlet impressed in Chelsea’s 5-1 win against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup on Wednesday night.
The Blues manager opted to bring on the promising 17-year-old in the second half and the Chelsea youngster repaid his manager’s faith with a decent performance in their resounding League Cup win.
Indeed, Ampadu was given the remarkable feat of being the first millennial to line up in a Chelsea team under Conte as the defensive midfielder helped the Blues dispatch Nottingham Forest in style.
The teenager replaced Cesc Fabregas in the 55th minute at Stamford Bridge and in doing so, he became the youngest player to debut for the Blues in over ten years at 17 years and six days old.
Speaking at his post-match media conference about Ampadu’s debut for the title holders in the League Cup clash, Chelsea manager Conte delivered a positive verdict.
“He’s another young player,” Conte said.
“He has the potential to become a good player but he must continue to work and improve.”
Chelsea won the Premier League title with two games to spare last season after finishing seven points clear of their closest title rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Conte missed out on domestic cup glory following a 2-1 loss to Arsenal in the FA Cup final.
