Jamie Carragher lavished praise on Alex Iwobi and Danny Welbeck for their solid performances in Arsenal’s goalless draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday.

With Mesut Ozil out injured with a slight knee injury and Alexis Sanchez starting on the bench, Arsene Wenger opted to play Iwobi in midfield and Welbeck up front for the visitors.

Chelsea started the game brightly but Arsenal grew into the clash and enjoyed longer spells of possession as the first half developed.

Arsenal had a goal rightly disallowed for offside in the second half when Shkodran Mustafi headed in.

Welbeck and Iwobi were both solid for the Gunners in the first half as they produced an improved away performance.

And Carragher was particularly impressed by the duo’s display for the north London side at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with both Welbeck and Iwobi coming off before full-time.

Speaking during Sky Sports‘ coverage of the game, Carragher said: “A proper, disciplined away performance. It was about time.

“A big difference from what happened at Anfield is that there was no Ozil and no Sanchez.

“These two, Iwobi and Welbeck, have been so disciplined and have done their job defensively as a tight midfield, stopping Chelsea going through the middle and forcing them wide.

“The work of Iwobi and Welbeck was fundamental.”

Arsenal return to Premier League action with a home clash against West Bromwich Albion on Monday week.

Chelsea, meanwhile, take on Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium on Saturday afternoon as they look to get back to winning ways in the top flight.
