Martin Keown wants Arsenal to use Man United as inspiration
The Arsenal legend wants the Gunners to emulate Manchester United and win the Europa League this season
Martin Keown has challenged Arsenal to follow Manchester United’s example and win the Europa League this season.
The Gunners missed out on a place in the Champions League this season after the north London side finished in fifth place in the Premier League table.
Arsenal start their Europa League campaign with a home clash against Bundesliga outfit FC Koln at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.
Liverpool reached the final of Europe’s second tier competition in 2015-16 but lost 3-1 to Sevilla in the showpiece in Basel.
Manchester United went one step better last term after Jose Mourinho’s side eased to a 2-0 victory over Ajax in the Europa League final back in May.
The Red Devils finished behind Arsenal in the Premier League table last term but qualified for the Champions League thanks to their Europa League success.
Former Gunners defender Keown wants to see Arsenal take the Europa League seriously.
“The competition seemed to galvanise Manchester United last season,” Keown told the Daily Mail. “It represented a new beginning for Jose Mourinho and his team.
“Arsenal should view the Europa League as an opportunity, not a consolation prize.”
Arsenal have won two of their opening four Premier League games so far after victories over Leicester City and Bournemouth.
The Gunners will make the short trip to defending champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday.
Arsenal have never won the Champions League and lost to Galatasaray in the Uefa Cup final in 2000.
